Double page spread continued

Due to the blog being down for about a week I have not blogged recently but during this time have succesfully created an interview, as they are frequently found in music magazines with new artists, for the double page spread.
 I have posted the interview to show the contents of it, however as I have posted this I have created the double page spread consisting of a background, interview layout, coloured fonts etc.

New girl band on the Indie Rock scene, ‘The Loveless’ take time out of their whirlwind to spend with SNARE! magazine. They talk about their new success, fashion and their future. SNARE! magazine warm quickly to their comedy and them as a band and wish them great success in the future.

After going to Starbucks (as they both walked in with large cappuccinos) they slumped down on our sofa’s.
Hard night?
Both: [Laugh] oh yeah!
Nothing a coffee can’t fix. Anyways, hi girls. To everyone you are known as The Loveless, but who make up the band?
Fran: Hey I’m Fran, the lead singer of the band.
Billie: And I’m Billie, we are both lead singers! Fran just says it first to make herself feel better, because we both know that I am the best singer.
Fran: Yeah, but I play guitar better.
Billie: This is true.
Ok, what about the rest of the band? Like drums, bass etc?
B: Oh them…well they’re not hot enough to be seen so they stay hidden at the studio.
F: Ha-ha! They might cause severe harm to peoples sight. Not a good look for the band.
B: We are only joking we love you guys!
So you are the face of the band. Are you enjoying your new success?
B: God yeah! [Sarcastically] That’s the only reason we are in a band for the fame, don’t really care about the music.
F: I’m going to be serious now, so shut up Bills. We love it; we love how people are not just recognising us but also our music. And the best thing is when people come up to us and sing our lyrics. That’s best part of it all.
And by this success you are obviously enjoying the parties.
F: Again it’s not the glamour of the parties that we love it is that other artists come up to us and tell us that they listen and enjoy our music.
B: Last night Florence (Florence and the machine) actually sung our song back to us. Now we are all best buds, got her on facebook and everything.
F: She is amazing.
Best friends with Florence get you. Made any other celeb friends yet?
B: Yeah Fran, she is a babe!
F: That don’t count we have always been best friends, since we were like four years old. [Jokingly] Too long for my liking.
B: Well I’m leaving you for Florence then, we can be ‘Florence, Billie and the machine’.
Gosh, since you were both four. So you must be really close.
F: Well we both have brothers, so we are basically sisters. But not blood related.
B: We are so close; sometimes I think that we are too close.
F: [Laughs] I know everything about her. Ask me anything and I will get it right.
B: What is my great uncle called?
F: [Thinks] FRANK! He knows best.
B: Go great uncle Frank.
So how did you start your band? Did you wake up one day and think ‘I want to start a band’?
B: We have always been performing together, talent shows, music concerts etc.
F: We started this band about three years ago, we were called ‘Rah!Rah!’. We tried to get signed for about two years before we got our break. But we had to change our name and look.
B: And here we are, with you!
And we are so happy that you are. You have a very individual approach to fashion, style and image. Did anyone inspire you? Or is it just a statement saying ‘this is who we are’?
Both: Erm.
B: We have always been interested in fashion, always keeping up with the latest fashion trends, hairstyles and all that. But we always put a twist of ourselves in what we wear.
F: We dress like how we feel. So I think that we have just created our style and image through our personalities.
B: So it’s a statement. ‘Cos we have big personalities. Also as we don’t stick to one style, a statement saying you can be whoever you want to be and wear whatever you want to.
In the future do you see yourselves bringing out your own clothing line, or something like that?
F: Who do you think we are? JLo? I don’t that is something we will do. Cos that will against everything we just said, saying that have your own style and all that. You can’t have your own style if you are wearing someone else’s clothes.
I see. So where do you see yourself in the future?
B: Doing what we are doing now. Making music, and pleasing our fans. That’s what it is all about for us.
F: [Laughing] But parties, celeb best friends and fashion are all important to us. Hopefully we will be more well known, that would be nice.
B: Yeah being a bit bigger.
F: I don’t want to get bigger, I like the size I am.
B: Funny… We have our first set of ‘big gigs’ in June, at The Apollo, which is exciting stuff.
F: And quite scary. But I can’t wait, it will be alive!
B: Woooooo!

In the interview I used a very chatty tone from the band as they are young and youthful and I wanted to show this through their language, not just their image and fashion.

Collage

The layout of the double-page spread is that on the left hand side is a collage of photos (as this allows me to show my skills and the range of photos that I took) and on the other side the interview. To create the collage I used my new found skills using the polygonal lasso tool which I used to cut around the pictures giving it that scrap book effect as I layered the pictures. Here is the collage that I created:

Interview Layout

I chose to use the colours pink and black as they are girly but yet edgy, the different colour fonts allow the reader to distinguish between the band and the interviewer. On the collage side I put some quotes on it as quotes are a convention of interviews. The pictures that I chose from the interview are all bright and show a fun side of the band.

Double page spread-interview

For my double page spread I have decided to create an interview with the new feature band 'The Loveless'. To acheive this I will research the type of questions that are commonly asked in music interviews, with new bands. From this I will create a range of questions that will appear in the interview, they will range in subject; from their influences, style and general band gossip.

My Ideas for the photoshoot

For the double page spread of my magazine it will include a photoshoot with the new band 'The Loveless'. My ideas to get a wide range of photos is to have three different settings, which will include three different styles of Indie Rock.

First setting/costume

The first style and setting is inspired by the singer Kesha, which is rock/urban. This will include:

• The setting of London, either in Camden Market or down by the Southbank skate park. The reason for this is that the areas have much character and youth to them which will look really full of life, which portrays the audience of teenagers.
• The costume is urban mixed in with rock. The fashion will include bright shorts, colourful trainers, high-top trainers, bright colours etc. This show the youth of and character of the band and the fashion which is associated with Indie Rock.

Second setting/cotume

The second style and setting is inspired by Fearne Cotton and singer Florence and the Machine which is festival/indie. This will include:

• The setting of fields with long grass, in open fields. This gives a nice contrast to the urban/rock image of London. I will take the photos in open fields in Claybury near to me which has really nice green fields and trees etc.
• The costume of these images will consist of checked shirts, florals, wellies, spring inspired clothes, festival inspired clothes. Festivals are popular with teenagers and this image will show this idea.

Third setting/costume

The third costume and setting is inspired by the character of Effy from skins, who is popular with the teenagers. The image is rock complete with studs etc. This will include:

• The setting will be a dirt track path which is under a bridge, which will work really well. As the path is dirty and dusty it allows it to be kicked and will look really good in the images.
• The costume of this image will be studded jackets, black, leather jackets, boots, ripped tights etc. This all rock which is associated with Indie Rock.
• The make-up and hair will be dark eyes, and messy hair.

Camera angles

To get a wide range of good images of my band for the magazine I will need to use a selection of camera angles. The camera angles that I have chosen to use are:
Medium Shot

• Contains a figure from the knees/waist up. This will allow me to show the outfits of the band which fit in to the indie rock image.
• Is a camera shot from a medium distance.
• Allows to see the mise-en-scene and background.
  

Close-up

• Shows very little background, and concentrates on the face.
• The face takes up most of the frame.
• More detail is seen on the persons face, e.g make-up
  

By using these two angles will vary my still images, however within these angles the band will be shown in different outfits, settings and posing in different ways.

New music magazine and band names

As my product is new and individual I will need to go through the process of creating a name for a new Indie rock magazine. The magazine will consist of an interview with a new band of the genre I will also need to create a name for the band.

When creating the names I first thought of band names. It will need to be a good memorable name that will appeal to the target audience. Some of the ideas were:

• Sweet Symphony
• Dismissed!
• Bitter Lies
• Rah!Rah!
• The Loveless
• Unspoken truth
• Alice in our land

Out of the above ideas I have decided to call the feature band of my magazine 'The Loveless'. The band will be a girl group, which may attract more females to read the magazine. They are going to be a young, edgy, fashionable, rebellious Indie Rock band.

The band will be very 'rock chick' and 'girl power', this will be shown through the photo's, their costume and style, also it will be shown by the double page spread interview.

As my magazine is of the music genre 'Indie Rock' I will need to think of a name which will promote this music style. My ideas of the magazine name are:

• SNARE!
• BASS
• IR music
• FM (free music)
• Unheard
• Rah
  

Out of the above I have decided to call my music magazine SNARE! as it is simple, has musical reference, promotes the music style and it also memorable.

For the band and the magazine name I will need a bold, unique font to sell them both. Using urbanfonts.com I was able to choose two fonts which I believe does so.

Planning

As I have completed all my research into music magazines, I can now take it all into account when planning and creating my product. However before I have made myself my own brief which is more detailed of what I want to achieve.
My Own Brief:

• To create a new music magazine promoting Indie Rock music, the bands and artists, the fashion and style all aimed at the target audience of the age of 14-19 year olds.
• To create a contents page of the magazine remembering the style, fonts, colours etc. used on the cover.
• To create/introduce a new Indie Rock band, who should the fashion and style and their own unique selling point.
• To create an interview with the new band, remebering all the conventions of interviews in magazines. Also include a wide range of still images of the band.

Whilst researching music magazines and Indie Rock music genre I came across four current celebrities who define what I want my magazine to promote, the image I want it to have,the fashion and the music.

• The first was new American artist Ke$ha who is also known in the UK. She has become popular very quickly, I like the style and attitude that she has which appeals to the target audience.But how and why does she appeal to them? These ideas I am going to include in my magazine.
• Fearne Cotton is widely known in the UK for her television hosting and her individual fashion, she is always in fashion magazines highlighting this individuality. Also she is a fan of attending music festivals, which include artists of the Indie Rock genre and the target audience also attend. The idea of a festival might be appropriate in my magazine and the ideas of Fearnes individuality.
  
  
• The character of Effy from UK teen hit show 'Skins', I really like the attitude she has in the show which is also shown through her fashion. She is really edgey and rebellious, which will appeal to the audience as it is youthful. This idea of being rebellious I will try to incorprate.
  

• Florence and the Machiene, she is an artist of the genre of the magazine. I am a fan of her music personally, and she appeals to the target audience as she has a unique style of fashion and music.
  
  

Analysing current music magazine double page spread and contents page

For my double page spread I have decided to create an interview with an artist. To get a better understanding of how to lay an interview out and what to include I analysed an interview from 'Top of the Pops' magazine. I analysed the conventions of magazines and interviews, the layout, fonts, colours, and the language used.

Also as I have to create a contents page I analysed the contents page of Q magazine. To get an understanding of what I have to include and what is present in a contents page.
