Preliminary task

Evaluation of my product

After making my product, a music magazine front cover, contents and double page spread I now have to evaluate my work. In this evaluation I have to answer the following questions:

  • In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
  • How does your media product represent particular social groups?
  • What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
  • Who would be the audience for your media product?
  • How did you attract/address your audience?
  • What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
  • Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?
Questionnaire
To get some feedback I have created a questionnaire to get the audiences response. Here is the questionnaire that I made:

Powerpoint
For the evaluation we have to present it through a powerpoint, answering all the questions.

Contents Page

This is my contents page that I created for 'SNARE!' magazine:

Process of creation

  1. Background: I stayed with the same colour as the front covers background, and the idea of the grey paint smudged around the edges.
  2. I then added the images I wanted to use for the contents; two pictures of the band 'the loveless' as they are cover star and the main focus of this issue. And a picture of my sister being another artist mentioned in the magazine called 'Arrest Aimee'.
  3. For the title of the contents I used the same font title as used on the front cover and if it was to be a  whole magazine it would be used through out.
  4. Then to add the text I used the text box tool. To set out the contents of the magazine I grouped the features of the magazine into different categories i.e. cover, features, gigs and online. As this layout is commonly found in magazines. Underneath the page titles I have wrote what the page consists of which will make the readers want to read the pages as they have insight what the pages are about.

Front Cover

After the research process of analysing front covers of current music magazines it was time to make my own.

Font Styles
For the front cover I decied that there are two main headings on the page: the magazine title 'SNARE!' and the band's name 'the LOVELESS'. Both fonts I decied had to be edgey and quite rebellious, so I used urbanfonts.com and searched through the wide selection of fonts on the website.
Here are some of the fonts that I liked for the magazine title:

For the masthead I chose the last font, as it is the boldest and as it has white splashed across it makes it rebellious.

For the band name I wanted a edgy, bold, close to handwriting font.
Here are some fonts that I liked:

I decided to use the second font, however as the masthead is black I decided to paint around the letters on photoshop to make it like it is on the cover.
Images
During the photoshoot my sister took photos of Danielle and I together for the front cover. The image I wanted for the front cover must have lots of attitude and be edgy as this image sells the magazine and this is the music genre.
Here are the photos that I chose from for the front cover:

^ I chose this one for the front cover picture as the expression on our faces is very edgey and full of attitude.

Colours
The theme colours I decided to use were red, black and grey as this is most common in indie rock music magazines.
The font colours ranged to give the front page some colour.

From here I started to create my front cover. It had to include the conventions of a magazine cover:

  • Barcode
  • Title
  • Image
  • Slogan
This is my magazine cover:

Process of making my front cover
I created my magazine cover on photoshop, however as I did not have many skills on this program but whilst making this I believe that I have improved them

  1. The first stage was to choose the photo for the front cover, and from here edit the lighting and colours of the photo. For the front cover I wanted a mid shot of the band, and just the silhouette, so achieve this I used the polygonal lasso tool to cut around the bodies, from the background. Edited picture:
  2. The second stage I chose the colour of the background, I opted with white as it is simple and not distracting. Onto the background I put the picture in the middle and free-transformed it to size.
  3. After I used the rectangular tool to created the red box which the title is in. I had to make sure that the object was behind the photo layer. Then I added the title and the slogan on 'Today's Indie magazine', which I rotated to be on the diagonal, (which shows rebellion as it is against the normal of being a straight box).
  4. Then I added the barcode into the right hand corner, using a text box added the issue number and date.
  5. Making sure that I was on the background I used the paint tool in the setting of 'Spatter 27' using a soft grey I created a dirty print around the image and titles.
  6. From here I edited around 'The Loveless' text painting around the letters with a fuchsia pink colour , then used the polygonal lasso tool and cut around the text then put it in front of the picture.
  7. To finish I used the text box tool to add the features of the magazine 'SNARE! fest' and 'Spring feeling' which is the theme of this issue.

Photos

Here are a selection of the photos that I took at the photoshoot:

This picture is at a long shot camera angle, which allows to see the clothes which are an important part of the bands look, also shows the mise-en-scene as I am leaning on a large tree which gives a laid back feeling.
This photo of Danielle is a mid-shot from through the trees, this is shown as the branch is infront of her face. Also the fields are in the mise-en-scene which add to the image. As Danielle is smiling makes the picture very warming and gives a happy feeling towards the band.
As Danielle is lying down gives a comical feel to the pictures, and by using the prop of the hat over her face gives this comical having a nap image.
The main focus of this picture is the branch as the leaves are all brown from the winter it is contrasting to Danielles spring clothes.
By throwing the scarf around gave the picture a splash of colour and movement.
This close-up of us was a potential front cover.
This mise-en-scene shows the trees, which I think works really well in the photos.
The sunglasses in the photo show the glamour of this photo and the band.
As this photo is through the trees they are in the foreground but in the background is the green fields, which I really like.
By jumping gives the image some movement and expression of fun and youthful which is what the band is about.
Again the energy from this photo works really well.
In this picture we did not capture the leaves that I had just thrown but I like the action and expression.
This low angle shot from the grass highlights the spring essence from in the photos and as Danielle is lying down gives the relaxed feel to the band.
High angle shot of the band.

Overall I was really proud with the outcome of the photos that I took on the photoshoot.

Photoshoot

I decied against my intial idea of taking photos of three different styles, the reasons for this are:
  • Is that it did not give the band a specific look
  • When making the double page spread an incorperating the photos this idea may not have worked
  • I was slowly running out of time to take my photos as Danielle and I had to find a time when we both not busy to take them
So I decided to go with the festival/country/spring style, as we are approaching this season.
For the photos for my music magazine Danielle and I, who made up the band 'The Loveless' went to Claybury Park to take photos of the spring, country, festival look. The reason I chose the setting of Claybury Park was because it has a spring feel to it as it has lots of tress, rolling hills and field of long grass. I wanted a wide range of photos, to achieve this variety I decided to take fun pictures of us jumping and running around, to create an exciting, wild look for the band. I also wanted to take some more serious photos of us posing. Within the photos we used some props; a straw hat, scarf, leaves and a branch from the tree to achieve the right image and feel to the photos.  Within my photos there is a wide variety of camera angles;
  • high angle shot
  • low angle shot
  • close up
  • mid shot
  • long shot.
By taking pictures from all thesedifferent angles show that I understand the concept of different angles shots and what is shown in more detail in the shot.
As I am in the photos, Danielle and I took turns to take photos of eachother but my ideas of how the photo should be, the kind of shot and how to pose where behind every photo, and there is clear evidence that I have taken the photos. However for the photos that we are in together, these photos were taken in my back garden in front of a brick wall by my sister as I need a selection of mid shot photos of us together for the front cover.
